Why you should really try Gelli Plate Printing

What the heck is ‘Gelli Plate® Printing’?

Gelli Plate Printing is an easy, quick and fun way to create monoprints without using a press!
You only need 4 things (and some fun extras if you’d like).

1. A Gelli Plate

I use this small 5″ x 7″ Gelli Printing Plate, but they come in lots of different sizes and shapes.
You could think the Gelli Plate is made out of gelatin, but that’s not the case! Gelli Plates do not contain animal products or latex. It is made with mineral oils and is a hypoallergenic polymer material. (More on their website: Gelli Arts®).

2. Paper (or fabric)

You can use any paper you like! When you just start Gelli Plate Printing, it’s maybe best to use regular printing paper (you will use a lot of paper!) to experiment. When you feel more comfortable you can use more expensive paper or cardstock. You just can’t use glossy paper, as this will stick to the plate and may damage it.
You can use fabric too, if you’d like (how cool is that!).

3. An ink roller

I’d suggest you use one or two ink rollers. One for spreading out the paint or ink on your Gelli Plate, and another one to use for the printmaking itself (to roll over your paper). There are different models and sizes available.

4. Paint

The best paint to work with on the Gelli Plate is acrylic paint. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but best is to use acrylics that don’t dry too fast.
You can also use oil-based inks and paints, stamping dyes and inks AND fabric paints.

Gelli Plate Printing is so much fun!

Now, how does it work?

First of all, make sure you have all your materials nearby. When you have chosen what colors you are going to use and what materials/extras (more on that later) and the type of paper (or fabric), you can start printing!

  1. Add paint to your Gelli Plate. Don’t use too much paint. It may take some time to find out what the perfect amount is, this also depends on the kind of paint you use.
  2. Roll out the paint with your ink roller to create a thin even layer. Put your paper on the plate and rub it or roll over it with another ink roller so the paint transfers onto the paper.
  3. Gently pull the paper of the plate and TADAAAAAM, you have made your first monoprint!
To add extra layers, just put paint on the plate again (anywhere you like) and put the print you just made back on the gelli plate.

If you want to create fun patterns, you can use a wide variety of materials to do this. And you don’t even have to spend money on it ;).
You can basically use everything you find at home or outside.
I, for example, used bottle caps, feathers, leaves I found in the garden and some cord.

The possibilities are endless! You can use sponges, straws, stencils, stamps, foam, and so on.

These are some of the creations I made together with my mom. Gelli Plate Printing is just a perfect activity to do together with friends or family! 🙂
